PARTY IN PATCHOGUE
IRENE EN PLEIN AIR
NO, I'LL GET THE DOOR
I create collages that celebrate subjective reality with an emphasis on optimism and nostalgia. My work is autobiographical.
Visually, I am inspired by the fusion of fashion, design, and decorative arts from multiple cultures and different time periods. A dynamic hybrid of drawing, photography, and sculpture, collage is the perfect medium for me to experiment with optical illusion through the manipulation of light and space.
My process starts with the perfect cut, only achieved with scissors. I have great respect for time. I take no shortcuts. Trying to solve a visuospatial riddle that will unlock a captivating perspective can take many months. I map out the composition to within one millimeter of precision. Then, I glue the pieces down, mindfully allowing imperfections and errors to lead to ingenuity and magic.
Being a psychiatrist enriches me as a visual artist and vice versa. My mission is to create art that promotes ideas about psychological resilience. I am interested in how the brain differentiates between memories derived from imaginative play vs. real life experience. I see collage as a metaphor for how the mind processes and organizes memories in a way that does not always correlate with logic, space, or time.
